New lead guitarist Chris Masterson debuts on 3/1 for Conan O'Brien

Chris Masterson, former guitar player for Jack Ingram, will replace Brad Rice in the Son Volt line-up.

Brad has been tapped to join Keith Urban on the road and will of course be missed. Chris joins Son Volt on March 1 for Late Night with Conan O’Brien and will also be on all future dates. As you see in this picture, Brad (left) and Chris (right) are old pals so the transition should be seamless. They even have matching Dusenberger DRW Ronnie Wood guitars! As he did on Son Volt's 2005 European Tour, James Welbourne (Pernice Brothers) will handle lead guitar for the WXPN gig and other events before Chris joins on 3/1.

Album Marks Farrar's and Son Volt's Most Diverse Record Yet

'The Search,' the intriguing new album from Son Volt, is set for release on March 6 on Transmit Sound/Legacy, and it's by far the band's most daring and diverse album yet. The follow-up to 2005's acclaimed 'Okemah and the Melody of Riot,' 'The Search' is a startlingly powerful and inspiring departure from the band's alt-country laden records, employing an exceptional variety of sounds, melodies, and arrangements.

"Instrumentally, the electric guitar was the focus of the last record 'Okemah', but for 'The Search' we wanted to try something new, " says songwriter Jay Farrar. "This time, we utilized different instrumentation to fit each song -- from guitar pedal loops to various keyboard sounds to horns."

The piano of 'Okemah's' gorgeous closing ballad "World Waits For You" returns here to open 'The Search' with the beautifully haunting processional "Slow Hearse." Laced with Eastern-style electric guitar and Farrar's signature vocals, the tune fades out to silence only to dive into 'The Picture,' a track that features an upbeat Memphis-style horn section combined with stirring lyrics that reflect on the current and future state of things, "when war is profit and profit is war."

There's the buzzing, Zeppelin-esque guitar of "Action"; the hypnotic, other-worldly riff of "Circadian Rhythm"; the vocal harmonizing of chanteuse Shannon McNally on "Highways and Cigarettes"; and the Big Brother commentary of title track "The Search," a solid rock song delivered as only Son Volt can.

'The Search' features Jay Farrar (vocal, guitar, piano), Dave Bryson (drums), Derry DeBorja (keyboards), Andrew Duplantis (bass, backing vocals) and Brad Rice (guitar).

Jay Farrar, who is currently wrapping up a run of dates with Anders Parker as part of their side-band Gob Iron in support of the duo's debut 'Death Songs For The Living,' will hit the road with Son Volt for a national tour in March.

The CD also features the last recordings by Buena Vista Social Club vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer.

Sales of the disc benefit Artists Project Earth, a charity to raise awareness about Climate Change.

CASH SAN QUENTIN

It took Johnny Cash 12 years to record one of his live prison shows, but it wasn't easy. He was threatened against doing it, warned it would ruin his career, but Cash's instincts were dead on. He just went ahead and recorded at Folsom Prison in 1968 and never sounded so raw and alive. The live album was a huge hit, and followed by the even bigger "Johnny Cash at San Quentin" - his first #1 album on the pop charts.

In this hour we explore how Cash's concert at San Quentin came about, went down and the wake it left behind. Your listeners will hear Johnny Cash on the edge, plowing through well-known songs and premiering new ones that stated, "San Quentin, I hope you rot and burn in hell." Needless to say, he almost started a riot in a room full of very bad men. The program also features a few songs from the show not included on the original live album.

For an inside view, we'll hear about prison life from the prisoners and prison guards, taken from the documentary "Johnny Cash in San Quentin." The original producer, Bob Johnston, speaks about the excitement and fear, as does Jim Marshall, photographer of the famous "Johnny flipping the bird at San Quentin" photo. We'll also hear about Johnny Cash's views on the lock-up from bassist Marshall Grant, son John Carter Cash, singer/songwriter Larry Gatlin and music writer Anthony DeCurtis.

The band’s members discuss the unusual history of Golden Smog, from its late-80s cover band origins to the sessions for “Another Fine Day” – their third album of original material. Between tracks from the new CD, these musicians also provide insights into how the music they make as Golden Smog is influenced by their own day-job careers in some of America’s most acclaimed and influential rock bands.

New Johnny Cash

JOHNNY CASH: THE LAST HIGHWAY

One-hour music intensive special celebrates the release of American V: A Hundred Highways, the all-new Johnny Cash album from his last studio recordings before his death in September 2003.

The songs from these final sessions are presented along with exclusive comments by both producer Rick Rubin and the Man in Black, himself. This program is a great way to premiere these new songs before the CD is in stores from Lost Highway Records on July 4, 2006.

American V: A Hundred Highways includes the last song Cash wrote (“Like the 309”), in a stirring mix of covers and originals that Rick Rubin describes as “…Johnny's final statement. They are the truest reflection of the music that was central to his life at the time. This is the music that Johnny wanted us to hear.”

As an added bonus, Johnny Cash: The Last Highway also features Cash performing some of his best known tunes live from the 1994 Montreaux Jazz Festival.
